Let us worship with reverence and awe for our God is a consuming fire.
Sometimes I think we think worship is just something that can just happen completely apart from where we are in our fellowship with God. I think we too easily forget that, if have sin "stored up" in our hearts God simply does not listen.
" If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened." Psalm 66:18 (ESV)
I think maybe we sometimes think that if a sin is not "too big," then the Lord will still find our worship acceptable. But, how big a sin is big enough to throw up that wall between us and God where our fellowship is broken? How much sin does it take to keep our worship from being acceptable and not just noise?
What about simple obedience?
Surely God is still pleased with our offering of worship even though we haven't been giving our treasure (tithe), time, or talent. Micah 3:8-10
Surely God is still pleased with our worship services even if we haven't been serving others. James 2:17-18
Surely God knows I love Him even if we don't love others. Matthew 22:37-40
Surely God accepts our attitude of worship even if we're ticked off at somebody else in the room. Matthew 5:23-25
Surely God would not be all that concerned over something so small as eating a piece of fruit without permission. Genesis 3:11-24
That's not really all that big of a deal, right?

I have found that unconfessed sin definitely affects my ability to have conscious contact with God. It's like it shuts my ears off. But I have also found that if I confess my sin then go into worship, I can sense the presence of God around me.
Great post, great reminder.

Surely God's grace is enough to cover everything listed above and much more. 2 Cor 12:9

Wow! Great post — I'm definitely on the same wavelength. Looks like we've been reading out of the same bloggers' Bible study or something.

James, I completely get what you're saying, and I agree. The grace of God can, and does, cover all sin. However, I'm speaking in terms of our ongoing relationship with God, our fellowship with Him, not our salvation.
As Dusty mentioned above, there is no doubt that harboring sin throws up a wall between us and the Lord. Our friendship with Him suffers when we have unconfessed sin lurking.
